DOES YOUR TOWN HAVE AN EMERGENCY PLAN? Elma/East Aurora Gas Leak (February 7) to be addressed at Elma Town Meeting

March 15, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm EDT

Adjusted for NEW DATE- March 15.
DOES YOUR TOWN HAVE AN EMERGENCY PLAN? Elma/East Aurora Gas Leak (February 7) to be addressed at Elma Town Meeting by Jennifer Marmion.
Place: 1600 Bowen Road, Elma, NY 14059
Citizens need to press their local town officials to make sure they are communicating with National Fuel and have a coherent Safety Plan/Evacuation Plan coordinated in case of an emergency such as the February 7 Elma/East Aurora Fracked Methane Gas Leak.
Jennifer Marmion has done quite a bit of research and has already addressed this issue at the East Aurora Town Meeting. She will bring this up at the Elma Town Meeting.
On February 7 there was a National Fuel Gas Leak in Elma, yet the fumes were overwhelming almost three miles away in East Aurora. EA Residents such as Jennifer Marmion’s parents in East Aurora began calling 911 and National Fuel. The Marmions were told to evacuate by National Fuel, but were given scant information as to the source of the fumes. Schools in the East Aurora area considered evacuation but they too were confused as to where the gas was coming from and so opted to keep students inside where the schools had an air filter system. Dozens of residents experienced headaches, nausea and dizziness. At the time of the leak and to this date, National Fuel has released very little information about this to local East Aurora first responders and residents. The Elma Fire Company raced to the scene of one report, but was told by National Fuel that the Gas Company had the problem in hand and the Fire Company was sent away. Now the Fire Company is not giving any information. There was no coordination between National Fuel AND the Towns of Elma or East Aurora as to what citizens could do during this emergency. This is unacceptable when it concerns the health and safety of residents – seniors and school children.

Before National Fuel begins construction on a pipeline or compressor and dehydration facilities, citizens in towns along the pipeline route need to press National Fuel for more immediate emergency communication. This communication MUST include a mandatory emergency notification alarm system. National Fuel must release to the public a thorough outline of The National Fuel gas leak monitoring system and inspections, and operating safety plan.
Citizens need to press their local town officials to make sure they are communicating with National Fuel and have a coherent Safety Plan/Evacuation Plan coordinated in case of an emergency such as the Elma/East Aurora Leak.
