Weekend of Action: Rev Dr King’s Birthday & Women’s March!
716-332-3904 1/15/20 wnypeace.org
Dear Friends,
So much is
happening! We invite you to take a deep breath ( – and breathing out twice as
slowly!) ……………., as we prepare to #Unite, #WomenRiseUP, and of course also to
Defend the Sacred.
Get ready for the Weekend of Action! Mainly Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s
Birthday Celebrations and the Women’s March (not chronological 😉
There are events for both happening from Thursday on.
Before anything, let us mention: the weather for our WNY Women’s March – this Sunday,
1:30 at Niagara Square – is predicted to
be light snow in the morning, windy (as it generally is, downtown), and 29°. Not what we’d prefer. Worst part: it might
be icy. But not currently predicted to be bad enough to cancel. Last year we
cancelled due to a blizzard, and then had 65mph gale-force winds on the
rescheduled date. So do remember, safety first, do dress warmly; and we’ll have
our Love and Truth to keep us warm! Also, we’ll keep it short!
Just FYI, our snow date (if it turns out to be worse than currently predicted)
is March 8 – when our Gender Justice Taskforce is already planning to have an
event.
Here are some of the Weekend of Action events coming up:
– Honoring Rev. Dr. King, Thurs, 12-1pm, Central Public Library, Buffalo;
– Women’s March Chant Rehearsal, Thurs, 1/16, 6-8pm, Sugar City, 1239 Niagara
St;
– Rededication of the Rev Dr MLK Head, Sat, 1/18, 2pm, starting at Calvary
Baptist Church, 1184 Genessee St;
– Women’s March Sign-Making, Sat, 1/28, 3:30-5:30pm, WNYPC, 1272 Delaware Ave
(entrance & parking round back);
– Women’s March WNY, Sun, 1/19, 1:30pm, Niagara Sq, #WomenRiseUp;
– MLK Celebration, Sun, 1/19, 6-8pm, Kleinhans Music Hall, Symphony Circle;
– Explore & More: Special MLK Day @ Children’s Museum, 10am-4pm, 130 Main;
– Talking Peace with the WNYPC, Mon, 1/20, WBNY 91.3FM (streaming at
wbny.buffalostate.edu) – Special MLK Program with Heron Simmonds, Little Africa
Cultural Center, and more.
We are
grateful to Congressman Higgins and all responsible Congress’s passing the War
Powers Act. Please call our Senators to urge their support of the War Powers
Act to any war on Iran, (Gillibrand: 202-224-4451; Schumer: 202-224-6542). We’ll
be gathering at Noon on Sat, 1/25 for No War With Iran at NFTA’s Main & Perry
station near Canalside. You can also go to codepink.org to sign an apology to
the People of Iran/Trump does not represent us!
Don’t forget the (free) trip to Albany for the HALTSolitary Campaign on
Tuesday, 1/21. See below or website to sign up.
As
always, more below, including regularly scheduled events & vigils, and more
at wnypeace.org, and on our facebook page, twitter (@wnypeace), and Instagram

- We are on track for a temperature rise of over 5.7°F by the end of the century.
- We have to reduce emissions by 7.6% each year between 2020 and 2030 to limit
global temperature rise to 1.5°C (2.7°F).
- The G20 countries are responsible for 78% of global GHG emissions.

Stand Up for Global Peace
The world is facing a 25-year peak in violent conflict. It is the main cause of human suffering today – trapping millions of civilians in conflict and uprooting 66 million people from their homes. According to the Institute for Economics and Peace, violence containment costs the world $14.3 trillion each year. There must be another way.
Over the past two years, a coalition of peacebuilding, humanitarian, and faith-based organizations have drafted a bill that would address the root causes of violence and fragility. The resulting legislation has been introduced in both the House and Senate as the Global Fragility Act (H.R. 1580/S.727). This bill would require the U.S. government – in collaboration with civil society – to develop a 10 year strategy to enhance stability and to reduce violence and fragility around the world.
We know that too much foreign assistance and Pentagon spending is spent on treating the symptoms of violence instead of its causes. By passing this law, the U.S. will be able to more effectively prevent violence around the world and reduce its enormous cost on families.
Today, hundreds of faith advocates will lift up the Global Fragility Act as part of their lobby day ask for the annual Ecumenical Advocacy Days. It is important for YOU to add your voice as well. Together, we CAN build a more Just and Peaceful World for All! Take action today to support the Global Fragility Act of 2019! https://p2a.co/Mc4rH0c
