AGENDA 9:00 am Opening & Welcome Comments

9:15 am “More Than a Word” — A film about Native American-based sports mascots and the Washington R*dskins which offers a fascinating look at the movement to change the name of the Washington football team, within the broader context of Native history & racial stereotyping

10:40 am “My Own Private Lower Post” — a powerful, beautiful healing story from Duane Gastant’ Aucoin, a Two-Spirited Tlingit, as he seeks to understand how his mother’s trials at a residential boarding school influenced his life. As she shares her story, he comes to realize how he, too, is a survivor and shares how their healing journeys can be grounded within traditional Tlingit culture *

12:00 pm “The Dawes Commission” — presented by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, this film describes the Dawes Act, a federal attempt to mandate individual ownership by Natives on their own land and to force them to abandon their ancestral, communal rights to their Indigenous land base *

1:10 pm “Awake — A Dream from Standing Rock” – this film tells the dramatic story of the historic #NODAPL Native-led peaceful resistance at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota. Tens of thousands of activists traveled to North Dakota from all over the world to take a stand alongside the “water protectors”

4:00 pm Thanks & Closing of the National Day of Racial Healing at NACS

IMPORTANT:

•   Each film WILL START ON TIME, and people may attend any film(s) as you are able to
•   There will be refreshments served throughout the day, with corn soup over lunchtime
•   This alcohol-free and drug-free event is FREE & OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY
•   Group discussions will be held after every film
•   * Films asterisked indicate a substantial portion being spoken in the respective Native
