Dear Friends,
Our friends at SURJ have called for another vigil today at 5:30 in front of the Erie County Holding Center (ECHC, Delaware & Church) in response to the Commission of Corrections Medical Review Board determination that India Cummings tragic death 2 ½ years ago was homicide due to extreme medical neglect by the Sheriff’s Department.
The Justice & Opportunity group of Open Buffalo is not having its regular meeting today (normally at the Rafi Greene CAO Masten Resource Center) to encourage people to go to this vigil.
Please note that the WNYPC regular Wednesday Vigil at 4-5pm outside the Holding Center is ongoing – happening every Wednesday. Please bring signs! We continue to hope Monroe County pathologist Scott LaPoint will restate that based on the investigation done.
Don’t miss Haudenausaunee Grandmother Norma Jacobs, Wolf Clan of Cayuga Nation, this Sunday at RS Environmental Sanctuary/Cottage (3449 West River Road, Grand Island, NY 14072, 4-6 pm, followed by potluck). All are welcome. This is a rare opportunity to be inspired by her wisdom and love. In these troubling times, we must take these opportunities more than ever to counter the lies and misdeeds prevailing in many arenas. Remember Dr. King said “.. Unarmed Truth and Unconditional Love will have the final word in reality. That is why good temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant.” Come hear and work so we can do as originally instructed for the good of all to the Seventh Generation.
So hear too Kathy Kelly, Co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, renown peace activist and Nobel Prize Nominee, on Saturday, July 21, the Global Days of Listening (7:30am-10:30am livestreaming) with the Afghan Peace Volunteers (go to globaldaysoflistening.org/); on a recording of her recent talk in Syracuse upstatedroneaction.org, and/or at Focus on Yemen, July 30, 7pm at Burning Books).
Also this Saturday:
– Celebrate/Honor Iris Alexander at 11am at Bidwell & Elmwood. We’ll celebrate the installation of a bench honoring Iris right by her beloved Women In Black (to be followed by same). Light refreshments; music – and all – welcome! Iris was a local legend – let’s remember and inspire each other with her example!
– If you missed the Stars under Stars fundraising events of our Latin American Solidarity Committee – come out this or next Saturday at 7:30pm for discussion, networking, information, and inspiration. This week focuses on Guatemala, and will be at Terry and Mary Bisson’s, 372 Voorhees Ave. (El Norte). BYO lawn chair and any refreshments you’d like, too!

Dear Friends,
The Commission of Corrections Medical Review Board has deemed that India Cummings tragic death 2 ½ years ago from 17 days in the Erie County Holding Center was homicide due to extreme medical neglect. We hope Scott LaPoint, the Monroe County pathologist who deemed her cause of death “undetermined” has the courage to restate that based on the investigation done. Please join us on Wednesdays at 4-5pm outside the Erie County Holding Center, at Delaware & Church, to vigil and protest (bring signs, please). No more deaths – uphold human rights and reverence for life!
Also tomorrow, don’t miss the Resist Militarism! Taskforce Meeting, joint with Veterans For Peace #128. Dear Friends,
Don’t miss Celebration For Change!: a Poor People’s Campaign Event this Thurs, July 12, 5:30 til 7:30pm at MLK Park. Besides celebrating the 40 Days of Action and the many more to come as we #UnitetheStruggles, we’ll also celebrate NAACP President Rev Mark Blue’s birthday – a great partner in the Poor People’s Campaign: a National Call for Moral Revival!
Community Jam Sessions with Ismail & Co, and with the Women’s Resistance Revival Chorus will be great especially because, like in the movement, participation is key. Food – hot dogs; potluck; and a birthday cake – will be on hand as will information and inspiration from supporting groups. Come register to vote if you haven’t already, and get one of our #LoveisLove signs as a membership gift.
Our new Assistant Director, Silver Light – well-known locally as a hard-working dedicated organizer and activist – will also be there with Stacey Smith, UBSSW advanced level inter, both of whom are helping us #UnitetheStruggles. It’s not too late to cosponsor, that means to publicize and table, just let us know at 332-3904, silverlight143@ymail.com or staceysm@buffalo.edu.
We’re also excited about the Stars under Stars fundraising events of our Latin American Solidarity Committee – come out any or all of the next three Saturdays at 7:30pm for discussion, networking, information, and inspiration on issues in our hemisphere in Cuba, Guatemala, and Chile. This Saturday, July 14, it’s at 67 Lancaster Ave, on Cuba – especially re the GLBTQ communities in Cuba. BYO lawn chair and any refreshments you’d like, too!
Also, if you’d like to help us transport Camp Peaceprints children and youth to swim on Tues and Thurs, July 17, 19, 24, and 26, from 12:15 to 2:30, we’d love it, and you can stay and swim with us!!
