Dear Friends,
Many thanks to all who joined together for extreme activism over the past two days to #CLOSETheCAMPS, share #LightsForLiberty, and #EndICEterror!!
Our best estimates put the total for 5 events on July 11-12 at 960 people. And nine yes 9 of them got arrested to make their point even pointier – we can’t have business as usual when children are being abused and neglected by the US Gov’t and its agents (read ICE and more) in our names!
Special thanks to a few individuals – the nine arrested, Jennifer Page and Juweria Dahir organizers and cohosts with us at the Bidwell Lights for Liberty, and the children who read at that vigil. Also of note, Congressman Brian Higgins has supported activism on the issue, and called out the administration on the illegal and immoral policies on immigration.
Sandra Steingraber, sustainability farmer, activist, and shero, came to Buffalo from her farm at the Finger Lakes, and was arrested (picture above – Thanks, Activists of Buffalo!!) at Buffalo protest in front of the DHS office. Sandra, who is a 59-year old biologist and author, stated,
“I’m risking arrest today because
I’m a biologist who knows that climate change causes crop failures that turn
farmers into refugees. I’m risking arrest today because my father fought Nazis
in Europe and taught me not to be a good German. I’m risking arrest today
because I’m a mother who knows that children are not criminals.”
-thanks to Whitney Arlene Crispell for the quote.
We encourage
all to contact all of our representatives – local, state, and especially
Congressional (Reps & Senators) to stress that this maltreatment of
refugees, immigrants and asylum-seekers must stop. It is contrary to the Declaration
of Human Rights, which is, under Article 6 section 2, the Supreme Law of the
Land, equal in force to the Constitution. #ClosetheCamps #Neveragainisnow!!
Feel free to call them every day! (Numbers are on our website, wnypeace.org,

According to the website, participants walk on blankets during the exercise, which represents the land, and step into the roles of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Participants walk through situations that go from pre-contact through colonization and resistance. The participants are guided by Indigenous Elders as well as trained facilitators who take on the roles of European explorers and settlers. The training is $30, however scholarships are available. In the conclusion of the event, participants can discuss and ask questions. You can view the website here: https://www.kairosblanketexercise.org/ . Please attend the monthly Poor People’s campaign meeting on July 8th at Raqs Solidarity at 6 pm. Join the campaign to confront the four evils of poverty, racism, militarism and ecological devastation, as well as the distorted moral narrative of this country. Local meetings are the second Mondays of the month.
Join Buffalo DSA and Burning Books for month two of an EcoSocialism mini-series with Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 sci-fi action classic Snowpiercer on Saturday, July 6th, before wrapping up on August 10th with Princess Mononoke–all movies start at 7 PM. In a future where a failed climate-change experiment has killed all life except for the lucky few who boarded the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe able to plow through snow and ice, the train’s poorest residents, who live in the squalid caboose, plan to improve their lot. No charge for the screenings but feel free to bring snacks to share.
Roll Red Roll will be shown on July 11th. It is a true-crime thriller and impact campaign that goes behind the headlines of the notorious Steubenville, Ohio rape case to uncover the deep-seated and social media-fueled “boys will be boys” culture at the root of high school sexual assault in America. The film unflinchingly asks, why didn’t anyone stop it? The impact campaign engages communities around the nation to answer this question for themselves, creating opportunities, tools and pathways for men and boys to challenge ingrained thinking about masculinity and explore their leadership potential in the fight against gender-based violence.
No hate, no fear as we are #StillResisting. Peace, Thanks, Solidarity, and yes Love.
