(The event will be also recorded). Politicians keep promising to increase our “national security.” Actually, the “national security” slogan is simplistic, limited, and deceptive. Usually, it is a glib euphemism for a bigger military and more weapons. It totally ignores what our nation needs in order to become truly secure. Actually, the U.S.’s violent foreign policy has actually made us LESS secure by making other nations suffer, antagonizing people into wanting to retaliate against the U.S., and distorting our national budget by funding military violence and failing to fund what we really need: ending poverty, protecting the environment, providing health care for everyone, and so forth.
The American people, government, news media, and the public need to seriously and open-mindedly re-think what “national security” should really mean. Our traditional assumptions about “national security” are simplistic, unethical, and have failed us. Actually, a peaceful and just foreign policy would make our nation and our world much more safe and secure. I propose a humane, inclusive concept of “TRUE Security” that would make our nation and the whole world more secure.
