Readings from Solitary at Southport

January 22, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm EST

Come to Burning Books (420 Connecticut St, Bflo) to listen to readings of narratives from people subjected to the torture of solitary confinement at Southport – one of New York’s prisons dedicated to solitary. And learn from members of a statewide anti-solitary confinement campaign (nycaic.org) how you can join the movement to end the torture of solitary confinement and challenge the entire incarceration system. (see also opening 1/23 @Rafi Greene Center to experience a replica cell – back to calendar for 1/23)

The Correctional Association of NY (CA) recently released a new report, Solitary at Southport. The report consists of devastating, horrific, and brilliant accounts given by people in solitary at Southport, along with data and other analysis. The report documents the horrors of solitary confinement, and the interrelationship between solitary and racism, officer brutality, abuse of young people and people with mental health needs, and parole denials.

At this event, the CA and members of the Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement (CAIC) will read excerpts from Solitary at Southport, and discuss efforts to pass the #HALTsolitary confinement act, A.3080/S.4784 and other policy changes in New York, including related to increasing parole releases, protecting domestic violence survivors, stopping brutality, closing racist and abusive prisons and jails, and more.
